Using PreviDent 5000
A prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste. Simple to use — with one rule.
PreviDent 5000 is a prescription fluoride toothpaste with roughly five times the fluoride of a standard over-the-counter paste. We recommend it when a child has had cavities, is at higher risk for them, or is in braces — situations where the everyday level of protection has not been enough.
The extra fluoride does two things: it hardens enamel against future decay, and it can re-mineralize early spots before they ever become cavities that need filling.
How to use it
- Once a day, at bedtime, in place of the regular toothpaste. Not in addition to it.
- A pea-sized amount on a dry brush.
- Brush thoroughly for two full minutes.
- Spit out the extra — and then do not rinse, eat, or drink for 30 minutes.
The fluoride needs contact time with the enamel to work. Rinsing right after — or a glass of water on the way to bed — washes off most of the benefit. Make it the very last thing before sleep.
Safety
Keep it up and out of reach, and stored separately from the regular toothpaste so it does not get grabbed by mistake. It is not intended for children under six, and it is not for swallowing. If a young child swallows a large amount, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222.
Where to get it
Available at our front desk at cost, or by prescription at your pharmacy — whichever is easier for you.
Call us if…
- Your child develops sensitivity or irritation while using it
- You are unsure whether to continue after a course of treatment
- A young child swallowed a significant amount — call Poison Control first
