Their story

She grew up in a family of dentists. She still chose to become one.

Dr. Evelyne Vu-Tien was born in Paris, France, grew up moving between states with her family, and eventually landed in California — where she graduated from UCLA with a degree in Business-Economics. Three aunts who are dentists and a number of cousins who followed gave her an early, unfiltered look at what the job actually involves. She chose it anyway.

She went to UCSF for dental school, where she held national positions in the American Student Dental Association, published articles, created a business curriculum for students, and received the Ethics and Professionalism Award and recognition from the California Dental Association for outstanding community service. Her pediatric specialty training was at Rady Children's Hospital in San Diego, where she became a Fellow of the AAPD and a guest lecturer for multiple groups.

She is now a volunteer professor in the Pediatric Dental Program at Rady Children's and is active in multiple San Diego County Dental Society committees. She has continued humanitarian dental work in Vietnam and Mexico and served on the Oral Health Initiative Board for San Diego Health and Human Services. Her husband is a Captain in the U.S. Navy with over 20 years of service. She is currently finishing her MBA at the University of San Diego.

She has two young daughters, a collection of rescue animals, and an active yoga-and-hiking routine. She's also attempting cooking, which she describes as an ongoing project. She manages all of this without appearing to be under any particular stress, which is honestly its own credential.
