What to Expect
At Coastal Kids, braces are provided by board-certified orthodontists who work alongside our pediatric dentists under one roof. That means your child's orthodontist and dentist are actively coordinating — sharing records, discussing timing, and seeing the complete picture of your child's oral development. We offer traditional metal braces, clear ceramic braces, and two-phase orthodontic treatment for children who need early intervention. The right treatment at the right time makes a measurable difference in outcome.
Orthodontic Consultation
We evaluate jaw relationships, facial structure, bite alignment, and tooth position using clinical exam, panoramic X-rays, and 3D digital records. We explain all findings in plain language and outline options without pressure.
Custom Treatment Plan
Every treatment plan is built around your child's specific anatomy and developmental timing — not a generic protocol. We set realistic timelines, explain what each phase achieves, and answer every question before treatment starts.
Active Treatment
Whether traditional metal or clear ceramic, we place and adjust braces with precision at regular appointments. We monitor progress, watch for any emerging dental concerns, and coordinate with your child's pediatric dentist throughout.
Retention
The end of active treatment isn't the end of care. We fit your child with retainers and explain exactly how to wear them — because the retention phase is as important as treatment itself for long-term results.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What age should kids get braces?
Most children are ready for braces between ages 11 and 14, after their permanent teeth have erupted. However, some bite problems are better addressed earlier in a 'Phase 1' treatment around ages 7 to 10 — particularly crossbites, severe crowding, or jaw discrepancies. Our orthodontists will tell you exactly what timing is right for your child and why, rather than defaulting to the industry-average age.
How long do kids wear braces?
Most comprehensive orthodontic treatment runs 18 to 24 months for children and teens, depending on the complexity of the case. Phase 1 treatment (early intervention) typically runs 9 to 12 months and is followed by a rest period before comprehensive braces in adolescence. We give you a realistic range at the consultation — not an overly optimistic number we'll quietly revise later.
Do braces hurt?
Placement day is typically painless. The first few days after placement, and after each adjustment appointment, your child may feel pressure or mild soreness as teeth begin moving. This is normal and usually settles within 2 to 3 days. Over-the-counter pain relievers handle it well. We prepare every patient for what to expect so there are no surprises.
Does insurance cover braces for kids?
Many dental insurance plans include an orthodontic benefit — typically a lifetime maximum of $1,000 to $2,500. We verify your coverage before treatment begins and explain exactly what's covered and what isn't. We also offer flexible payment plans through Sunbit to spread the remaining cost over time. No family should skip orthodontic treatment because of sticker shock — talk to us first.
