About This Service

What to Expect

A pediatric teeth cleaning is about more than removing plaque. It's an opportunity for our board-certified specialists to track your child's oral development, catch early problems before they become expensive ones, and build the kind of positive dental experience that shapes how your child feels about dentistry for the rest of their life. We see children from their first tooth through high school — and we adjust every cleaning to match where your child is developmentally.

Step 01

Exam & X-Rays

We start with a full visual exam and, when age-appropriate, digital low-radiation X-rays. We're checking teeth, gums, bite development, jaw growth, and any early orthodontic signals — not just cavities.

Step 02

Professional Cleaning

Our hygienists are trained specifically in pediatric technique — gentler tools, kid-sized instruments, and a pace that matches your child's comfort level. We scale, polish, and floss thoroughly without rushing.

Step 03

Fluoride & Prevention

We finish with a fluoride treatment and custom guidance on brushing, diet, and any habits (thumb-sucking, pacifier use, mouth-breathing) we noticed. You leave with a real plan, not a pamphlet.

Why Choose Us

Why Families Choose Coastal Kids

Board-Certified Specialists

Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.

Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof

Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.

Same-Day & New Patient Access

Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.

Insurance Handled for You

We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should my child get a teeth cleaning?

Most children benefit from cleanings every six months. However, our pediatric dentists assess each child individually — some high-risk patients benefit from visits every three to four months, while low-risk children with excellent hygiene may do well on longer intervals. We'll tell you exactly what schedule makes sense for your child.

When should my child have their first dental cleaning?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental visit by age one, or within six months of the first tooth erupting — whichever comes first. Early visits establish a dental home, catch developmental issues early, and help children build comfort with dental care before anxiety can take root.

Does a teeth cleaning hurt for kids?

For most children with healthy gums, a professional cleaning is painless. Kids with inflamed or sensitive gums may feel some mild pressure or tenderness, which we address by adjusting our technique and communication. Our pediatric hygienists are trained to recognize signs of discomfort and slow down or pause as needed.

What's different about a pediatric cleaning vs. a regular dentist?

Pediatric dentists complete two to three years of specialty training beyond dental school focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Our hygienists use child-sized instruments, our exam includes developmental screening that adult dentists don't perform, and our entire team is trained in child behavior guidance — from the language we use to how we manage anxious patients.
