What to Expect
Fluoride is the most studied and evidence-backed tool in pediatric preventive dentistry. Professional fluoride treatments deliver a concentrated dose directly to enamel, strengthening it against acid attacks and — in early cavity cases — actually reversing demineralization before a cavity fully forms. In-office fluoride is far more concentrated than toothpaste, and a brief application provides months of protection. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends professional fluoride for all children twice a year.
Risk Assessment
Not every child needs the same fluoride protocol. We assess your child's cavity history, diet, water fluoridation, home care, and enamel quality before recommending the right type and frequency for their specific risk level.
Application
We apply professional-strength fluoride varnish — the form preferred for children because it adheres to teeth and delivers fluoride slowly over hours. The application takes under two minutes and has a pleasant, mild flavor.
Aftercare Instructions
We ask your child to avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes to let the fluoride absorb fully. That's it. We also provide guidance on fluoride toothpaste amounts, supplements if needed, and any dietary recommendations based on what we see at each visit.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is fluoride safe for children?
Yes. Fluoride has been used safely in dentistry for more than 75 years and is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the CDC, and the World Health Organization. The amount used in professional fluoride treatments is carefully calibrated and is far below any level of concern. The tiny amount of fluoride varnish used in a child's appointment is equivalent to the fluoride in a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.
How often does my child need fluoride treatments?
Twice a year is standard for most children and aligns with their regular cleaning schedule. Children at higher cavity risk — including those with a history of cavities, poor enamel formation, high sugar intake, or limited access to fluoridated water — may benefit from treatment every three to four months. We personalize this recommendation at each visit.
At what age should fluoride treatments start?
We begin fluoride varnish treatments as soon as the first tooth erupts — typically around age 6 months to 1 year. The AAPD recommends this because early childhood caries can begin the moment teeth are in the mouth. We adjust the application technique and dosage for infants and toddlers to be completely safe and age-appropriate.
My child already uses fluoride toothpaste. Is in-office treatment still needed?
Yes. Fluoride toothpaste provides important daily protection, but professional fluoride delivers a concentration 10 to 20 times higher than toothpaste, applied directly to vulnerable surfaces. The two work differently and complement each other. Children who use fluoride toothpaste twice a day AND get professional treatments have significantly lower cavity rates than those who do one or the other.
