What to Expect
The back molars are where most childhood cavities form. Their deep grooves and pits trap food and bacteria that brushing simply can't reach — even with perfect technique. Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of those molars, sealing out the bacteria and food that cause cavities. Studies show sealants reduce the risk of molar cavities by nearly 80%. They're quick, painless, and one of the most effective preventive treatments available for children.
Cleaning & Preparation
We clean and dry the tooth surfaces thoroughly. A gentle acid solution is applied briefly to create a slightly rough surface for better bonding — this feels like a mild tingling and is completely painless.
Sealant Application
The sealant material is painted onto each groove and pit of the molar, flowing into every contour. The whole process takes just a few minutes per tooth.
Curing & Check
We cure the sealant with a small blue light in seconds. We check the bite to make sure everything feels natural, and your child is done — ready to eat normally immediately.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
When should my child get dental sealants?
The ideal time is shortly after the first permanent molars erupt — usually around age 6 — and again when the second permanent molars come in around age 12. Getting sealants on freshly erupted molars, before any decay has a chance to start, is when they're most valuable. We monitor each child's eruption timing and recommend sealants at exactly the right window.
How long do dental sealants last?
Well-placed sealants can protect teeth for up to 10 years. We check them at every cleaning appointment and reapply or repair them if needed. In practice, most children who get sealants at age 6 still have protective coverage well into their teens.
Do sealants hurt?
No. There's no drilling and no numbing required. The entire application is painless — most children barely notice the brief acid conditioning step. The appointment is typically shorter than a standard cleaning.
Can sealants be placed over existing cavities?
Not over active decay — we need to treat any existing cavities first. However, sealants can be placed over very early-stage lesions that haven't yet broken through the enamel, where the sealant effectively prevents the lesion from progressing. Our doctors make this clinical call carefully on a case-by-case basis.
