What to Expect
A pediatric dental exam at Coastal Kids is comprehensive in a way most parents don't expect. Yes, we look for cavities. But our board-certified pediatric dentists also evaluate jaw growth, bite development, airway health, tongue function, and early orthodontic signals — things that, if caught at the right moment, can prevent years of more complicated treatment later. We document findings visit by visit, building a longitudinal record of your child's development that informs every clinical decision.
Head, Jaw & Soft Tissue
We start outside the mouth — checking facial symmetry, jaw alignment, lymph nodes, and soft tissues. Signs of airway issues, grinding, or habit patterns often show up here before they show up on an X-ray.
Teeth, Gums & Bite
We examine every tooth surface for decay, cracks, and wear patterns. We probe gum tissue, assess bite alignment, and note crowding or spacing that may need orthodontic monitoring. Digital X-rays are taken when clinically indicated.
Development Review & Plan
We sit down with you and explain exactly what we found, what it means for your child's trajectory, and what — if anything — needs to happen next. No vague reassurances, no overselling. A clear, honest picture.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a pediatric dental exam include?
Our comprehensive exam covers teeth, gums, bite alignment, jaw development, facial symmetry, soft tissues, and age-appropriate X-rays. For younger children, we also screen for habits like thumb-sucking, mouth-breathing, and tongue-thrusting that affect dental development. The goal is a full developmental picture, not just a cavity count.
How often does my child need a dental exam?
Twice a year is the standard recommendation, and it's right for most children. But your child's actual schedule should be based on their individual risk profile — cavity history, diet, oral hygiene, and developmental concerns. Our pediatric dentists will give you a specific recommendation at each visit rather than defaulting to a one-size-fits-all schedule.
At what age should a child have their first dental exam?
By age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. This isn't just a formality. Early exams let us establish baseline development, identify risk factors for early childhood caries, and counsel parents on feeding habits, fluoride, and home care before problems start.
Do you take X-rays at every exam?
No. We take X-rays when they're clinically justified — when your child has a history of cavities, when we can't see between teeth visually, or when we're monitoring specific developmental concerns. We follow AAPD guidelines and always use the lowest radiation dose needed. Digital X-rays reduce radiation exposure by up to 80% compared to traditional film.
