What to Expect
When a child has a cavity, the most important thing is treating it before it grows. Untreated decay spreads — into the nerve, into neighboring teeth, and sometimes into permanent successors below. At Coastal Kids, we place tooth-colored composite resin fillings that are virtually invisible, bond directly to tooth structure, and require less drilling than traditional silver amalgam. Our pediatric dentists are trained in behavior guidance techniques that make the experience manageable even for anxious children — including nitrous oxide when needed.
Numbing & Comfort
We start with topical numbing gel before any injection, so your child feels the sensation of pressure but not pain. We work slowly and talk through each step so there are no surprises. For anxious children, we can offer nitrous oxide to take the edge off.
Decay Removal
We remove only the decayed portion of the tooth — no more. Modern pediatric technique and small pediatric-specific instruments let us be precise, removing less healthy tooth structure than older methods.
Filling Placement
The composite resin is placed in layers, shaped to match the natural tooth anatomy, and hardened with a curing light. We check the bite carefully and polish the restoration so it feels completely natural.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do baby teeth really need fillings?
Yes. Baby teeth hold space for permanent teeth, help with speech development, and allow normal chewing — for years. A child doesn't lose their last baby tooth until age 12 or 13. Leaving a cavity in a baby tooth to 'fall out on its own' risks pain, abscess, early tooth loss, and space problems for the permanent teeth below. Treating decay in baby teeth is real dental care, not optional.
How do I know if my child has a cavity?
Many cavities in children have no symptoms until they're large. That's exactly why regular exams matter — we find cavities when they're small and easy to treat, before your child has any pain. Signs that a cavity may already be significant include sensitivity to cold or sweets, visible discoloration or holes in a tooth, or pain with biting. Any of these warrants a call to us.
Will the filling hurt?
With proper numbing, the filling procedure itself should be painless. Your child may feel pressure and vibration from the drill, which can feel odd but shouldn't hurt. Some children feel mild soreness in the injection site for a day or two afterward. We use topical anesthetic before every injection to minimize discomfort and take our time with technique.
How long do kids' fillings last?
Composite resin fillings in children typically last 5 to 10 years, depending on the size of the cavity and the tooth's location. Baby tooth fillings are meant to last until the tooth naturally falls out. Permanent tooth fillings are built to last significantly longer. We check all existing restorations at every exam and repair or replace them if they show wear.
