What to Expect
Dental anxiety is real, common in children, and doesn't have to derail care. Nitrous oxide — commonly called laughing gas — is the safest, most widely used sedation option in pediatric dentistry. It takes effect in minutes, wears off completely within five minutes of removal, and allows your child to remain fully awake, responsive, and comfortable throughout treatment. Our board-certified pediatric dentists are trained in behavior guidance and sedation specifically for children — not as an add-on, but as a core part of their specialty training.
Assessment & Discussion
We review your child's health history and anxiety level, explain how nitrous oxide works in age-appropriate terms, and answer every question before the appointment. For most children, understanding what to expect is itself calming.
Administration
A small, soft mask is placed over the nose. Your child breathes normally and begins to feel relaxed within two to three minutes — many describe a warm, tingly feeling. We keep talking with them throughout to gauge their comfort and adjust the flow as needed.
Treatment & Recovery
Dental treatment proceeds with the child relaxed but fully cooperative and responsive. After treatment, we switch to pure oxygen for five minutes to clear the nitrous oxide. Your child can walk out of the office, eat normally, and return to school or activities the same day.
Why Families Choose Coastal Kids
Board-Certified Specialists
Our pediatric dentists and orthodontists completed 2–3 years of specialty training beyond dental school, focused exclusively on children's development, behavior, and oral health. Not generalists who also see kids — specialists who see only kids.
Dentist & Orthodontist, One Roof
Your child's dentist and orthodontist share records and coordinate care in the same practice. That means developmental concerns get caught early, treatment decisions are informed by the complete picture, and your family doesn't shuttle between offices.
Same-Day & New Patient Access
Five locations across San Diego means we almost always have same-day appointments available — for emergencies and new patient exams alike. You shouldn't have to wait weeks for your child to be seen.
Insurance Handled for You
We accept most major insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Smile California. Our team verifies your benefits before treatment and explains exactly what's covered and what isn't — no surprises at checkout.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is nitrous oxide safe for children?
Yes. Nitrous oxide has been used safely in pediatric dentistry for decades and is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry. It's the safest form of dental sedation available. It doesn't affect breathing or heart rate, clears from the body within minutes, and has an exceptionally long safety record across all age groups. Our doctors monitor your child continuously throughout administration.
What does nitrous oxide feel like for kids?
Most children describe feeling relaxed, slightly giddy, or like their hands and feet are tingling. Some feel warmth. A few report a mildly funny, floating sensation. It doesn't make children unconscious or unaware — they remain fully awake, can hear and respond to instructions, and remember the experience afterward. The goal is to take the edge off anxiety, not sedate them.
Will my child need nitrous oxide for every appointment?
Not necessarily. Many children who start out anxious gain confidence over a few appointments and no longer need nitrous oxide. Others benefit from it at every visit — that's perfectly fine too. We assess each appointment individually and never push sedation when it isn't needed, but also never make a child white-knuckle through treatment if nitrous oxide would help.
Is there anything my child should do before a nitrous oxide appointment?
We recommend avoiding a large meal two hours before the appointment to prevent nausea, which is the most common side effect (and not common overall). Light snacking is fine. There are no other restrictions. Your child can eat, drink, and resume normal activities immediately after the appointment.
